In less than five years, Newgate Communications has established a global and regional public relations network that today rivals the traditional global players, whose market presence has dominated the Asia region for decades.
The passion of Newgate’s leadership team and highly experienced professionals highlights a phenomenal growth story in terms of network expansion, high profile financial and corporate communications mandate wins, as well as staff growth and development.
As Chinese companies increasingly look beyond their home base and global firms seek both to build and protect their reputations in China, the launch of Shanghai office alongside our existing operations in Hong Kong and the rest of the world offers a perfect platform to support Newgate’s growing client base.

8 March 2018, Hong Kong and Shanghai – Newgate Communications, the global strategic communications consultancy, today announced the further strengthening of its Asia operations with the launch of an office in Shanghai.
Newgate, which is part of Porta Communications, advises clients globally on corporate and financial communications and public affairs issues. The firm has 16 offices and 34 partners globally. In the past year Newgate has been ranked by Mergermarket as a leading M&A communications adviser in Asia Pacific, was a finalist in the Holmes Report’s APAC Financial Communications Campaign of the Year Gold Sabre Awards and a nominee for PublicAffairsAsia’s APAC Regional Network of the Year Award. In recent weeks Newgate’s London office also won the Best M&A Communications Award at the PRCA’s City & Financial Awards for its work for the US-headquartered and Chinese-backed PE fund Canyon Bridge on its £550 million acquisition of Imagination Technologies.
Newgate’s new Shanghai office is being established by Hong Kong Partner and co-founder Grace Zhang. Grace has more than a decade’s experience working with clients in China and globally on corporate brand-building and reputation issues, capital markets and M&A transactions, complex restructurings, as well as crisis and litigation situations. She reports to Greater China Managing Partner and founder, Richard Barton.
Barton commented, “Establishing a Shanghai office is a natural extension for Newgate, to meet strong demand from both Chinese and global businesses for support on the increasingly complex communications issues they face. Our offices in Greater China operate as a single team providing our clients a consistently high level of local in-market knowledge combined with extensive cross-border expertise. Grace has been an important part of the growth of our business since launch in 2013 and will bring the same dedication and expertise to our expanding client portfolio in China.”
Grace Zhang, Managing Partner Shanghai and Head of China, said, “This is an exciting time for Newgate. As Chinese companies increasingly look beyond their home base and global firms seek both to build and protect their reputations in China, our new Shanghai office offers a perfect platform for continued growth. We continue to expand our team across the region and will continue to make selective hires of experienced, proven consultants.”
